Eric Johnson Scholarship

Tyler Carver Scholarship

Eric, son of George and Doris Johnson, died an untimely death in May, 1987 just three weeks before his high school graduation.  Eric's parents began their first Hardee's Restaurant in Athens, TN in 1965. As George & Doris Johnson worked hard, they watched their business grow into over 40 restaurants in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia.  With the success of their restaurants, they always invested in the communities that supported them. Since George's death in 1996, the Hardee's restaurants under the name J&S Restaurants, Inc, have operated under the leadership of their children, Mark Johnson and Julia Scoggins.  The George R. Johnson Family Foundation is directed by their oldest daughter, Janice Wilson. The Foundation makes grants to charitable and educational agencies in the areas where the family owns and operates their Hardee's restaurants.

Eric was liked by people of all ages.  He was known for his friendliness and love of life and the whole community was touched by his death.  As his parents expressed, “There are so many reasons for giving in honor and memory of Eric.  Our family misses him more than we can express.”  Eric had an enthusiasm for life that was hard to miss.  He often was heard saying “Life is great.”  Eric was a senior at Cleveland High School and an active member of the Key Club in Cleveland.

Tyler Carver had a positive impact on everyone in life he met whose life was not so blessed. He was reported by his friends as cool, social, suave, funny and handsome, but more important was his sense of the value of every human life.  As stated by a young man who reportedly often felt like an outcast, "Tyler was fearless. He stood up for me.  He treated me like a human and I was so thankful! He was one of the most amazing people I've ever had the honor of meeting.”  Tyler’s tender heart, and gentle smile, and positive impression have lingered in the hearts of all who knew him and count it a privilege to have been part of his life.
